How to be a Biblical man? Be strong.

Hello everyone. I hope you have all had a great week and weekend. In this world of confusion, we need truth and certainty more than ever. This is a world where we don’t know what truth is, we don’t know what our gender is and we don’t have a good direction for our lives. Well this series will be trying to give some clarity on what it means to be a Biblical man no matter what culture or background you come from.

So where do we start? Well I believe we should start with a man after Gods own heart. That man would be David the king of Israel. This is a man that’s been in wars, fought a giant, slain a lion and bear and then proceeded to lead his nation to borders that they hadn’t seen before. So from many peoples perspectives, you wouldn’t call this man a coward or a feminine man but rather a courageous warrior and king.

“Now the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying: “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn”

1 Kings 2:1-3

Now to understand the importance of this passage, one has to understand the context of this. These are some of David’s last words to his son that would take the throne and be king after him. These are not words that are meaningless or meant to be a joke like you would say to a friend that you think you’ll see tomorrow. These are words from a father and king to his son that he very well knew might be his last before he sees his son in heaven in the future.

So what can we learn about being a man from this passage? You can learn a lot. For today, we will start our series on this manhood series here.

The first thing he tells him to do is to be strong. Now this can mean to be strong physically but from experience and reading of the Bible, I believe this to be more than just physical strength. This means to be strong in your stance, your faith and be strong for others to lean on.

I remember growing up, I had a grandpa who I would play chess(yes I was that kid haha), I looked up to him and would ask him questions whenever I had no idea what the answer was. He was a pillar in my early childhood. When he passed away when I was almost 14, he told me to be strong for my mom which was his daughter. Now at 14, I understood it as don’t cry when he dies and be there for my mom for the foreseeable future as she copes with her fathers death.

Now a little older, a little wiser(I believe) but still needing knowledge, I believe it meant more than just to show no emotion at the funeral or the few weeks and months later. It meant that I needed to be strong enough for my mom to rely on me to help her out. She would depend on me a little more as she wasn’t at her best just as she also depended on my stepdad.

I believe David meant the same thing for Solomon here. He needed to be strong enough for others to depend on you for help, guidance and protection. He would need to be strong enough to lead an entire nation on top of his family. He would have the responsibility of millions on his shoulders just as we as men will have the responsibility of our families now or in the future, or those that look up to us if we don’t have one.
