Who is your hero?

So I know a lot of people are being influenced by this coronavirus. Either directly by getting infected or indirectly by working in a capacity where you’re exposed to it or your government has put in policies for people to isolate themselves. During this isolation period, I’ve seen a lot more posts on Facebook and Instagram about people’s appreciation for nurses and those that are considered “essential” to society and so therefore are still working and getting exposed to this virus. Some are posting so much about the ones still working that it’s encouraging for those that and some are even describing them as almost hero like in one or two comments that I saw that stuck in my mind.

That got me to thinking. What are heroes and how would you describe one?

A hero would be someone that is noble, selfless, willing to take the blow or strike(physically, reputation, emotionally) for the sake of someone else. They obviously aren’t selfish or greedy.

Though nurses and some people that are still working do have some of those qualities that could potentially make them a hero if a situation arises, they’re not heroes of the most purest form. Because they have sinned, they can’t be a true pure hero but rather an imitation of one.

I’m technically an “essential” employee and I’m still working. I work in a mental hospital along with being a youth pastor. I’ll be honest with you in that when I’m going to work, one of my motives is in order to make some money to provide for my wife and I and then whatever else we want to do with the rest. Even though I love to help people and nurses and plenty of other people do as well, we still have the motive to make money and to do what we want to do with it.

The motives for the true hero in Jesus Christ were not divided and tainted with sin like ours are. This is not taking a shot at any people still working but rather lifting up Jesus Christ above us.

“He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; He was despised, and we didn’t value Him. Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds. “

Isaiah 53:3-5

This passage talks about how Jesus Christ would be rejected and despised so his motives definitely weren’t to be loved by us. He definitely wasn’t going to get rich by doing what he did. He decided to come down, live a perfect life and then go to the cross to die for our sins. And for doing this selfless act, we spat in his face, beat him and then nailed him.

We then continue to spit in his face and what he did with every sin we make. He took the punishment that we deserve and didn’t complain one bit. This is unlike us that are still working that every now and then complain about our jobs. This is different from us that he wasn’t expecting anything in return but we at the very least expect money and respect in return but Jesus got neither.

Now again, this is not demeaning those that are in direct expose to this virus by working still but rather let’s keep our perspective. What is your true hero? Who is your true hero?
