When one thinks of courage, what do you think of? Do you think of going into a battle against all odds, or powering through adversity? Though those are some examples of courage, to be a true man of God, we need to have more than one type of courage. Though this post will be going over courage, there will be some overlap with my previous post about strength.
“As for me, I am going the way of all of the earth. Be strong and be courageous like a man, and keep your obligation to the Lord your God to walk in His ways and to keep His statutes, commands, ordinances, and decrees. This is written in the law of Moses, so that you will have success in everything you do and wherever you turn,”
1 Kings 2:2-3

So for one to understand how we should be courageous, we first need to know what it means. One definition is for the person to do something that frightens or scares them.
Even though something may physically hurt us, if we aren’t scared to do it, then it very well might not be courage we are bringing forth but rather pride or stupidity depending on the situation and if the action is needed.
So since the definition is to do something even though it scares us, what are Biblical things that we can do that might scare us?
Well depending on the person, something that might scare them is taking responsibility for their actions or taking charge and leading their family. In this world, broken families are abundant and statistics show that fatherless homes wreak havoc on the children in that family. The children are more likely to be in jail, be suicidal, and suffer from physical and sexual abuse than those children with fathers in the home with them to protect them.
The need is here and it’s a Biblical need as well.
So why would staying with the mothers or atleast being a huge portion of their child’s life be scary and therefore push men away from being courageous and taking up the mantle of leadership in the family? To be honest, there could be a few things.
One that comes to my mind is that they might feel inadequate and maybe think that they will take criticism from their wife/kids/ family whenever they are trying to parent their kids. They will make mistakes and therefore don’t want to be in the heat of it and have another persons life on their shoulders.
They also could not take up the mantle because they want to stay in their own personal lives. They don’t want to give up what they’ve acquired and so then they don’t acknowledge their kids or family. But in order to be a Godly man, we need to be courageous enough in order take responsibility of our actions.
Another area in our lives that we as men might be scared to do is for us to lead our families or just ourselves to God. We may think that we aren’t spiritually mature enough in order to lead our wives and children or that they may know more than us. This very well might be true but according to the Bible, we are called to lead our families if we have them and if we don’t, continually grow closer to God anyways.
It’s really easy to criticize those in authority or in leadership when you have nothing in the game but it’s much harder to lead than to follow. God tells us to lead in Ephesians 5 so that we can first learn more about God and help teach our families. Another reason why is Because too many of us will take the easy road and not take an active part in our spiritual walk if we don’t have someone depending on us for leading. So we need to have courage to take up the mantle of leadership and pursue God.
Of course there are millions of ways we can be courageous, these couple of ways are just what God placed on my heart today in order to speak about. So what is God calling you to do today that scares you and he wants you to take a new step in your life? Of course, make sure it’s Biblical and maybe God might be calling you to take the next step in becoming a Godly man.
