Are you adopted?

It’s Sunday here in the United States and I hope all of you are having a great day and growing closer to God each day. A lot of things happen in life to cause chaos and disorder in our lives from Job loss, deaths, to anything under the sun. But there is one thing that brings stability in peoples lives no matter what and that is God himself.

But before I get ahead of myself, let’s talk a little bit about my mindset as I read this couple verses. Before this, my wife and I have thought about if God could be telling us that we should adopt a kid the past few weeks. The thought of ‘if we are ready and if not, how can we get ready if God is calling us to do that’ came into our mind. Then this verse came into my study today.

“All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “ Abba, Father!”

Romans 8:14-15

Hcsb Bible

The difference between God and I, is that he is and always was ready to adopt us as his children. And as we talk about adoption with God, keep in mind how he has and always was and always will be ready for us to be adopted.

One of the things that is a common misconception about God is that everyone is his child, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality you are actually at war with God before being you become his child. Just like in regular adoption on earth, you can’t be apart of and identify as part of a family until they have adopted you legally or you were born into it. The difference in the spiritual adoption into Gods family as his children is entirely up to you to decide. All you have to do is have faith in him and his son Jesus Christ as your personal savior and Lord. Then you can be brought into the family of God.

As I was looking into possibly adopting a child with my wife, I was curious as to some of the benefits that come with being adopted and some of them correlate with being adopted by God.

One of the benefits of being adopted is that in the ideal situation, you are being adopted by a loving family that will give you a place to go to and identify with. A place you can call home. The same thing happens with God in that you can always come to him as your father no matter what time of day or whatever season of life you are in. You can identify with him as your father when you take the name of ‘Christian’, very similar to how we would take the last name of the person who adopts us.

Being adopted helps give the child a boost of confidence because he/she knows they have someone to have their back in order to accomplish their goals. The same thing happens with being a child of God, when you have the confidence to attack life with confidence because you know that the worst thing that can happen to you is to be sent to heaven when you die.

Another benefit of being adopted is having the support from your new family to do what you want to do. Same thing happens to a child of God when you find a church home and we as a family should be supporting each other. As children of God, we are meant to help bear each other’s burdens.

Another benefit of being adopted is the direction of the adoptive parents. The adoptive parents try their best to guide the child that’s adopted by helping them make better decisions than they did growing up. The same thing as children of God when he convicts us when we sin and tries to guide us back to repentance and helping us make the right decisions through conviction, the Bible and prayer.

Of course there may be more benefits of adoption that is similar to God adopting us but I can’t think of any more off the top of my mind. If anyone thinks of other similarities, comment below because I would like to know some of your thoughts as well.

So as a person living in this world of chaos, confusion and uncertainty, how about you choose somewhere where you can get that order, direction and confidence? Choose to be adopted by God. Be a child of God by repenting of your sins and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

If you have any questions or thoughts, comment below and I’ll respond when I can. I hope you have a great day.

Just an average guy that loves Jesus, football and wanting to learn more about God everyday. I post my devotions and lessons on here to gather my thoughts together. So if I make a mistake, tell me and if you know places where I can learn more, tell me that too. I hope y’all have a great day.

    1. Thanks. Good to hear. It’s definitely something that God might be guiding us to do eventually in the next couple years or so. It was just kinda cool how this verse came in front of me soon after I asked God to clarify if he wants us to adopt or not.
