Who is the Holy Spirit?

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is having a great day and growing closer to the Lord in the midst of the chaos that is today with Coronavirus. During these times, we usually try our best to pray and read our Bibles when we don’t know exactly what to do and we are worried. And who is it that helps us with our quiet time and our prayer life? It’s the Holy Spirit and he is the most misunderstood part of the trinity. So who exactly is he?

Before I get into this, this is not an exhaustive list but rather a short study of this passage in John 14. If I were to do an exhaustive study and lay out all of the ways that this affects our lives, it would be almost a small book on just this passage. So thank you for reading and I hope we learn something together.

“15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 “In a little while the world will see Me no longer, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live too. 20 In that day you will know that I am in My Father, you are in Me, and I am in you. 21 The one who has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me. And the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father. I also will love him and will reveal Myself to him.” Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it You’re going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus answered, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 The one who doesn’t love Me will not keep My words. The word that you hear is not Mine but is from the Father who sent Me. 25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit—the Father will send Him in My name—will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you. 27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful. 28 You have heard Me tell you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. “

John 14:15-28

Hcsb Bible

I remember growing up listening to the preacher and they preached on Father God and Jesus and never preached on the Holy Spirit too much and I had a wrong view of what he was for most of my childhood. When people think of the Holy Spirit, they generally don’t think of a person but rather the Holy Spirit is an “It” or has no personality. The problem with this is that The Bible explicitly calls the Holy Spirit a He and he has a personality in that he can also be grieved( Ephesians 4:30). This means that he has opinions on things and has emotions just like us.

He first is one of the three in the trinity. The three being God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. All are unique, and different but all are equally God as well as being the same one with each other. Of course I could do a whole other post about just the trinity but this will do for now.

Also after we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior, the Holy Spirit as part of the trinity lives and dwells within us forever. It doesn’t say that it leaves us after a certain time or any number of sins will kick him or even our own choice would kick him. It says that he will live in us forever.(verse 14:16). This means that we are saved once and for all and will not lose our salvation.

Even though we as Christians May receive him to live within us(verse 14:1717), the world can’t receive him(verse 14:17). The reason is that they don’t know him because they have chosen not to know him or haven’t heard of him yet. So the Holy Spirit only lives within those that believe in Jesus.

The Holy Spirit is not someone that lies to us but rather gives us the truth in everything(verse 14:17). So if you ever think that the Holy Spirit is telling you something, go to the scriptures and test it. If it contradicts Gods word, then it wasn’t from the Holy Spirit but rather Satan or our own selfish desires.

When the Holy Spirit lives in us, he adopts us into the same family as Jesus and children of God(verse John 14:18 and Romans 8:12-16). This is fantastic since to even think that we can be brothers and sisters of Christ when we certainly don’t deserve it.

He will work and show himself to us through changes if we obey his commandments(verse 14:21). We will obey him because we love him.

The Holy Spirit will also help us learn the scriptures and will teach us when we are trying to learn(14:26). Sometimes we will read the word of God and not understand it immediately but the Holy Spirit will help us. And nonbelievers wont understand some lessons in scripture because they don’t have the Holy Spirit.

And then later on during life and conversations, He will remind us of lessons that the word of God taught us(14:26). This will occur when we are in Bible study and we remember another verse that is similar to the one we’re reading or we are trying to help a brother or sister in Christ as they go through tough times.

Through terrible and chaotic times such as today, the Holy Spirit also gives us the peace that God is in control and indescribable( verse John 14:27 and Philippians 4:7)

He also convicts of wrong in our lives ( John 16;8). As children of God, he won’t just let us sin and not at least tell us when we’re wrong eventually.

Thank you for reading this post and I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. If you have any questions or disagreements, just comment below and I’ll respond when I can. Also, if there was something you learned, comment below as well. It’s great to hear from people.

Just an average guy that loves Jesus, football and wanting to learn more about God everyday. I post my devotions and lessons on here to gather my thoughts together. So if I make a mistake, tell me and if you know places where I can learn more, tell me that too. I hope y’all have a great day.
